APR. 20: DAVID COX: TRAUM EUROPA + LASLEY + RHODY/SMITH +The second half of our Neo-Geo double-header is all about the world-at-LARGE, with a dozen expansive cine-essays, ranging from the Sri Lanka civil war to Texas-toasted digital dystopias. Mission maestro David Cox anchors the evening with his exploded-tabletop live-triagrammed Traum Europa, an enacted micro/meta-history of Europe's shifting relations of Nation and Identity. Closer to home, tho still Great Plains-otherworldly, Justin Rhody and Abby Smith are here in person, back from from Santa Fe with their tableaux vivant poem Interior Frontier. Their New Mexico comrade Ben Kujawski's also here in the flesh, with his sublimely soulful Empty House, and Valencia/Clarion Alley veteran Julie Murray shares her Chicago souvenir Haversine. Sarah Lasley's ', whose 3-D animation, Welcome to the Enclave, clues us to our future virtual-realities, while Rajee Samarasinghe's Strangers reminds us of the utter human-scale poignancy of lived moments in the Indian sub-continent. This issue #33 of OTHERZINE incorporates the DNA of another San Francisco Bay-born radical publication, Bad Subjects. This is its issue #92 too, settled in to occupy some of Other Cinema’s comfy seats here until its own website undergoes reconstruction. We hold hands as the movie unspools.Viva Pink, standing up against Orange! In the January 2017 Women’s March, Pink Pussy hats asserted female leadership and activism. The 2016 Presidential campaign of pinko (OK, socialist Democrat) Bernie Sanders excited and involved many voters, especially millennials. President Donald Trump, his hair and skin alternating between various shades of orange/lemon yellow/yogurt pink, has galvanized American and global opposition to his policies, his insults, his general demeanor. And as “Orange is the New Black” reminded us, incarceration is always a risk for the disobedient and, perhaps, dissident.
