Outsourcing Torture

SAT. 2/11: CIA TORTURE TAXI + KIDNAPPING AMERICAN STYLE

Back once more from the moral wilderness of Nevada, our intrepid investigative journalists-cum-experimental lecturers Trevor Paglen and A.C. Thompson reveal the malignant secrets behind the so-called “rendition” flights that ferry terror suspects to foreign dungeons. Paglen’s expertise in military “Black Ops” enabled this gonzo geographer to penetrate the innermost circles of this heinous trafficking in human suffering. Arresting visual evidence grounds this riveting, righteous report on the violation of international human rights guarantees. ALSO: Andrew Gilligan’s long-form doc on the new growth industry of extracting information under duress. PLUS: Inspired footage of a detainee jailbreak, NSA word play, and a parody of national paranoia.

Manson and Mayhem

SAT. 2/18: METAL STORM + LIVE FREAKY! DIE FREAKY!

Kier-la Janisse, the notorious force behind Vancouver’s Cinemuerte Festival, has now compiled a metalhead’s wet dream of music clips and news reports surrounding the bizarre events in Norway’s Black Metal scene. Homicide, suicide, and burning churches all figure in this tragic story of an unholy war within this dark musical subculture. The first part of this diabolical double bill is Live Freaky! Die Freaky!, John Roecker’s puppet-animated musical of the Manson murders, voiced by a legion of punk-rock icons, including X’s John Doe, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, and Italian horror diva Asia Argento. Please note special show times and admission: LFDF at 8pm; Metal Storm at 9:45pm. $6.66 for one show; $9.99 for both.

Retinal Rivalry

SAT. 2/25: GRETA SNIDER'S VIEW-MASTER SPECTACULAR+

The queen of all things DIY, Snider brings her enlightened 3-D documentary initiative to our microcinema environment. Johunna Grayson, Lee Krist, and Erick Lyle also provide their hand-processed perspectives. And McGlaughlin shares his precious historical insights on the 19th century Stereo View formats, which will be made available to the assembled throng. SAT. 3/4: ARTHUR LIPSETT REVIVAL

We’re honored to present an extremely rare program of films by legendary Canadian collagist Arthur Lipsett, the found-footage essayist of the ‘50s and ‘60s who tragically took his own life before his legacy could be secured. The LA-based Global A group (Johannes and Lars Auvinen) jet up for an in-person launch of their painstaking preservation of the Lipsett catalogue core, seriously at-risk with the crumbling of the Canadian National Film Board stewardship. Re-mastering in Berlin’s best sound studios, they have gone to the extraordinary measure of making vinyl pressings of the soundtracks to 21-87; Very Nice,Very Nice; A Trip Down Memory Lane; and Free Fall. The Brothers Auvinen will play turntable selections before these titles receive the very best digital projection from our gallery’s newly-acquired unit; the collectible records will be available during the show. After intermission, Lipsett’s half-hr. Fluxes is screened in its original 16mm format.

Cameras on Catastrophe

SAT. 3/11: BRECKE ON DARFUR + DANIEL ON NEW ORLEANS

In this benefit for Doctors Without Borders, we will enjoy an audience with two globe-trotting troopers who have risked life and lens to capture images from the sites of two recent (and ongoing) human disasters. Mark Brecke presents his They Turned Our Desert Into Fire, which details his Washington, DC photo tour to expose the genocide in Sudan. Supporting this lively look at a photog’s quest for political education is Phil Cox’ frontline doc Darfur’s Dirty War. Opening the evening is our favorite roving reporter, Bill Daniel, with shocking visual testimony on the apocalyptic post-Katrina conditions in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward. Special admission: $6–$20.

Lil' Hitler from Halliburton

SAT. 3/18: THE UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF DICK CHENEY +

On the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we invite all dissenters to vent some righteous outrage at arguably the war’s prime mover, (Vice) President Cheney. We were lucky enough to snag this Canadian made-for-TV expose that shines the light of day on this sleazy, greasy war pig, a man who extols the virtues of torture, and wants land-mine production brought back online. So let’s call it a Pig Roast, with pork (and tofu) sausages freely dispensed. Stoney Burke will emcee and Pod will deejay, setting up a block of scorching agit-prop, with Ed Holmes in Cheney drag, the Yes Men on the campaign trail, Bryan Boyce’s ventriloquist trick, and hell yeah, a Hummer bonfire! Our post-protest lounge opens at 7:30, showcasing DJ Pod’s latest CD releases.

Poetry Of The Cobblestones

SAT. 3/25: CHRIS MARKER'S CASE OF THE GRINNING CAT +

In the second session of our two-week suite on War and Peace, here’s the latest from master French film essayist Chris Marker. Shot on the streets of Paris over the course of mounting European resistance to American imperial aims, this hour-long lyric plays out Marker’s very personal fascination with the enigmatic appearance of the cat, in this case appearing on the walls and placards of French anti-war activists. This preview screening is facilitated by a live translation by Colleen Silva. Supporting the main feature is an ensemble of short subjects that also address this global horror-show through artists’ eyes, including poignant pieces by Jacob Bricca, James Schneider, and Edouard Salier. Free red wine.

Art Against Apartheid

SAT. 4/1: BREAK THE SILENCE ON PALESTINE

Break the Silence, a collective of women muralists in support of Palestinian autonomy, have made numerous trips to the Middle East, most recently for mural projects in both Gaza and the West Bank. Their solidarity work also includes partnering with youth and feminist groups, as well as providing trauma relief through the Palestinian Counseling Center. Now, Susan Greene and Sara Kershnar have returned to narrate slides and share a revelatory video on the devastating impact of the Israeli Apartheid Wall. After the presentation, there will be an extended Q & A over refreshments and regional music.

Lo-Fi Hi-Jinx

SAT. 4/8: GERRY FIALKA'S PXL THIS 15

As is our wont, OC hosts the latest iteration of Gerry Fialka’s plucky low-tech fest. The Pixelvision camera, in case you didn’t know, is a plastic toy that records picture and sound on an audiocassette. It failed in the marketplace in the ‘80s, but in the decades since, electronic folk artists have embraced the minimal B&W aesthetic, creating a quirky new subculture within the field of personal cinema. This year’s edition features Bryan Konefsky’s Beautiful Dreamer, Eli Elliott’s One, and Robert Dobb’s TV Ain’t No Tactile, among a host of others…though the highlight may end up being Gerry’s legendary introduction, trading on lofty McLuhanisms, Joycean run-ons, and goofy puns.

Separating Church and State

SAT. 4/15: DARWIN VS. THE CREATIONISTS

It is certainly too bad when our academic institutions are threatened by retrograde superstition…as if some forces in our society were afraid to accept the fact that humans are also part of the animal kingdom. Around the time of the Scopes trial, Max Fleischer turned his considerable talents from Betty Boop and Popeye to advancing an enlightened view of human development. Here’s the premiere revival of his legendary 1923 masterwork, Evolution, a courageous cinematic initiative, that in fact includes stop-motion dinosaur footage from Willis O’Brien, projected in gloriously tinted 16mm, with musical accompaniment by David Cox! We open with a newsreel from that infamous “Monkey Trial,” plus a Joseph Campbell clip on genesis myths and—believe it or not—a crackpot Fundamentalist screed, The Evolution Conspiracy. PLUS a collection-plate of assorted religious anomalies, including Pat Robertson, Satanic backward-masking, and a sneak peek at Wandering Eye’s new doc on Christian wrestling, Taking Satan to the Mat!! A portion of the proceeds goes to the ACLU.

Hackers and Hoaxsters

SAT. 4/22: PRANKS AND INTERVENTIONS

In the first of a pair of culture-jamming gigs, we host three incendiary media miscreants and a mixed bag of new (and old) tricks. In a mid-career retrospective of the Keatonesque Tom Borden, we witness his gutsy, occasionally scatological performances, spanners in the works of the commercial machine. Also slated is the Metavid project, a 30-min. show n’ tell by Michael Dale and Aphid, who have managed to hack the C-SPAN closed-caption window, inputting critical info on featured Congressmen in real-time. The jam-boree kicks off with a set of inspired and inspiring guerrilla tactical jokes from the Yes Men, the Biotic Baking Brigade, a Boston Tea Party-crasher, and prankster godfather Joey Skaggs. Broadcast live by Neighborhood Public Radio.

Pop Cult Parody

SAT. 4/29: BILLBOARD LIBERATION FRONT PRESENTS POPAGANDA

In the second installment of our Pranks series, the BLF, those storied stalwarts of late-night billboard alteration, surface in our gallery—merry, masked, and Mayday-mobilized, to introduce Pedro Carvajal’s POPaganda. Pedro’s hr-plus doc focuses on the antics of painter Ron English, a modern-day Robin Hood of Madison Ave., who renders an alternative universe of advertising subversion. Shepard Fairey, Daniel Johnston, and the Dandy Warhols also have a hand in the production. PLUS Craig Baldwin’s history of billboard hits, Bryan Boyce’s latest celebrity defenestration, and a preview of Negativland’s upcoming DVD. Free toast and grape jam (and grape wine)!

Incredibly Strange Music

SAT. 5/6: ECC AND BRAN FLAKES DO THEREOKE+

tradeMARK of the Evolution Control Committee and Otis Fodder of the Bran Flakes team up to tell us all about the Theremin, that cult-classic electronic instrument with the ethereal sci-fi sound. After some curious history and expert demonstration, audience members will be invited up to try their hand on the device in time to a pop backing-track, à la karaoke. The two experimental musicians also take turns spinning the most absolutely absurd artifacts in their vast vinyl collections. AND: Believe it or not, we’re encouraging attendees to bring mobile phones for Kristin Cato’s interactive cell-phone symphony! PLUS a feast for eye and ear on the big screen, with glimpses of Spike Jones, Gene Simmons, and the Punk Rock Orchestra. Bonus: The mighty Optigan! $6.

SAT. 5/13: COUNTER-CORP KICKS KORPORATE ASS!

We are heartened by a kindred project here in the ‘hood, the (hopefully) annual weekend presentation of films and panels that take the corporations to task, the CounterCorp Festival! Come on down for a drink and a snack in this screening-room reception that serves to launch this ambitious undertaking. Fest director John Wilner—with special guests—share their visions for an engaged and critical citizenry before busting open a vault of corporate-identity promos. Among the jaw-droppers are IBM’s early-computer chronology Piercing the Unknown, Delco’s That’s the Way It Is, Philco/Ford’s Year 1999, General MotorsOur American Crossroads, Oscar Mayer’s Because We Care, Coronet’s What Is Capitalism?, and Hilton’s Hotel Ethos, among other Amerikan Korporate Kamp. Live A/V

SAT. 5/27: COSTABILE + BOYCE + DAV IS

The Bay Area is especially blessed with an emerging generation of sound artists who work with hacked and hot-rodded computer applications towards the creation of an entirely new kind of audiovisual performance—a real-time electronic cinema that is ingenious and refreshing. Here are three young wizards emerging from the SFAI nexus: Sue Costabile manipulates objects and images in an exquisitely abstract dance of color and form; Nate Boyce takes a more aggressive approach to sound and image editing via a dangerous Jitter habit; and John Davis undresses a film projector with Piezo mics and handheld lenswork in a sublimely kinesthetic cine-poem. $6.
