SAT. 9/14: GOOGLE AND THE WORLD BRAIN + MANNING + ARCHIMEDIA +Simultaneously amazed and daunted by the Orwellian effects of a wired matrix that's expanding at the speed of light, The World Brain exposes Google's master plan to scan every book in the world...and the people trying to stop it. In person, Archimedia (David Cox & Molly Hankwitz) demonstrate the history of Google Glass(TM), from Steve Mann's sousveillance to an Augmented Reality that is becoming an integral part of today's urban experience. Linking these networks of knowledge to the military arena, Wikileaks: The Forgotten Man explores the netcentric politics of Bradley/Chelsea Manning's whistle-blowing. PLUS former San Franciscan Laura Poitras and ex-OCaide Jenny Perlin's leaked video of Manning's Fort Meade testimony, BIT-Plane, Colossus, and early computer films.
SAT. 9/21: FORSTER’S VINYL RESURGENCE + MUYBRIDGE + 16MM SOUNDIES +A survey—and celebration!—of Analog Media culture: Ben Wood re-capitulates Frisco’s fabled father of the moving image, Rick Prelinger annotates Trip Down Market Street in a 60 Minutes clip, and Will Nold documents the relentlessly cruel theatrical switch to DCP. ALSO: Russ Forster—with one hand on the turntable and the other on the overhead projector, and a third(?) on electric guitar—complements that cinema timeline with his own demented performance on the value of vinyl, leading to other seminal
audio-art-ifacts: Tiny Tim on 8-track tapes, an Optigan promo, the SF Tape Music Center, Moog and modular synth clips, Harry Partch, Clint Enns, even the Trololoman! Free beer (and typewriters!!) launch Russ’ latest 8-Track Mind issue, while fantastic 16mm Soundies (Spike Jones, Liberace, et al) toast that lost format.
SAT. 9/28: SAM GREEN’S TREE UTOPIA + DEAR COMRADE + JESSE DREW +Mr. Green graces our gallery again with the debut of this “live cinema” piece on the generosity of tree-planting. His performance is paired with the endlessly inspiring Esperanto section of his Utopia in Four Movements. Echoing Sam’s communitarian impulses is (in person) Mady Schutzman’s hr-long essay on Llano del Rio, a 20th Century secular cooperative founded in Southern California by socialist Job Harriman. Her visit to a Colorado commune and staging of sci-fi scenes are among the parallel universes that play out the possibilities of intentional communities. AND another dear comrade, Jesse Drew, sets the tone on autonomous zones West of Eden (Iain Boal’s new anthology). Sangria!
SAT. 10/5: ALVA-DYE + BECKER + WOODMAN + DUMPTRUCK + SHALO Launching Incite’s new issue on alt.exhibition, OC enacts the theme with an aggressive Live Cinema show!! Deploying a free-hanging screen, Alva & Dyemark's double-16mm projection As Big as a House rhapsodizes on sports, while Tommy Becker vocalizes to Songs for the Lemons and for Disobedient Youth, with audience participation! Cincinnati’s Charlie (viDEO sAVant) Woodman pic-mixes his Drowned World in concert with the ambient-jazz Geishafold. Shalo P unveils The Spy, a neo-psychedelic electronic collage, while Sam (Dumptruck) Manera hunkers down on a home-made knot of noise-makers, with closed circuit close-ups! Twixt the live acts: Semiconductor’s latest, Claire Bain’s mirrored imagery, Lillian Schwartz’ 3-D, Bing Crosby’s Auroratone, Len Lye’s ’35 GasparColor, and Peggy Nelson’s adieu-to-analog. $7.77.
SAT. 10/12: ACKERMAN’S WIDELY UNKNOWN + DANIEL + SWOON + ENGLISH +Behind-the-scenes NYC “break-through” of the now-famous Mission School movement, Josh Ackerman’s hr-long doc chronicles that historic Deitch Gallery exhibition acknowledging the tragic death of Margaret Kilgallen. Composed of installation views, opening scenes, and thoughtful interviews with Rigo, Barry (Twist) McGee, Chris Johanson, Buz Blurr, and Alicia McCarthy, this seminal material is finally available in the form of a complete 55-min doc...perhaps the world premiere!In a co-presentation with SFAI Bill Daniel appears in person to ground our regional aesthetic. PLUS cameos of other street artists, including Swoon, Futura, Doze Green, and Ron English.
Former Mission denizen Ascher returns to the freak zone with two works driven by media conspiracies. His collage-essay feature on the signs, symbols, and confessions embedded within Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic The Shining—seen through the eyes of five very different viewers—dives into the myriad theories behind this infamous adaptation of Stephen King’s psychological horror. But trumping Rodney’s cross-over Rorschach is the world premiere of his truly underground Mega-Mix, an obsessively researched compilation especially crafted for OC audiences. Discover the secret agendas of our leading Pop Divas (and their puppet-masters) by decoding the cryptic secrets hidden in plain sight within Hollywood blockbusters!
SAT. 10/26: SPINE-TINGLER: WILLIAM CASTLE + MONSTER KIDS
Through the ‘50s and ‘60s, master showman Castle directed a series of horror films with outrageous audience-participation gimmicks, treating viewers to buzzing seats, flying skeletons, and luminescent ghosts. Jeffrey Schwarz’ Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story is a riveting rags-to-riches tale of this exploitation legend. Our favorite cult-film monger Christian Divine personally sets the historical context: Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, Universal genre revivals, Aurora model kits, and TV-horror hosts. $6.66.
SAT. 11/2: SODA_JERK + COX' OTHERZONE + FLYING SAUCER DRONE +That dazzling Australian sister act, Soda_Jerk, teleports into our fantasy lab for the North American premiere of The Carousel, their double-projected séance fiction. Their tandem performance navigates a marvelous universe of sci-fi, mysticism, techno-horror, kung-fu, and zombie flicks towards the resurrection of the cinematic dead. ALSO out of Oz, David Cox’ speculation on our tech-saturated near-future stars Stelarc in a morality tale on autonomy vs. corporate control. PLUS premieres from Caroline Koebel, Thorsten Fleisch, Shanna Maurizi, Pierre Conti, and Georg Koszulinski’s multimedia ode to Frankenstein, an amped-up, hand-processed 16mm epic projected over Georg’s own shuddering body. Kicking off a 3-week Psycho-Geographic excursion: Former neighbor Mark Street introduces his neo-realist feature on a Montevideo DJ who invites on-air listeners to share their intimate thoughts, blurring public and private personae. Mark workshopped with resident actors, processing the lingering effects of Uruguay's military dictatorship, illegal abortion issues, and the emergence of a contemporary South American subjectivity. Cinéma vérité scenography parlays the ramshackle port city into a compelling counterpoint to callers' voices, rendering a post-colonial identity within its architectural vestiges. We open the show with free Yerba Maté tea and two of Mark's shorts, Happy? and Trailer Trash.
SAT. 11/16: LYNNE SACHS’YOUR DAY IS MY NIGHT + CHRIS MARKERProdigal daughter Sachs returns with a dramatic ethnography on a little-seen subculture: older residents of “shift-bed” apartments in New York’s Chinatown, where immigrants are jammed into shared rooms, beds in use around the clock. Non-professional actors play out issues of privacy, intimacy, and ownership, as their shift-bed experience finds cinematic expression through vérité conversations, character driven fictions, and integrated movement pieces. Collaborating with cinematographer Sean Hanley and composer Stephen Vitiello, Sachs’ mixture of reportage, play-acting, and memory opens up an Other hidden world. Preceded by: Lynne’s collaboration with Chris Marker, Three Cheers for the Whale, plus 3 of her NYC portraits.
SAT. 11/23: JEANNE FINLEY + SLAB CITY + TAR SANDS +Appreciating the nuances of Place, especially the (no-)zones of the American West, we premiere Jeanne Finley's Fat Chance, a meditation on a Point Reyes shipwreck. Katherin McInnis seconds the motion with her Bay Area Disaster Drills. ALSO in its debut, Brigid McCaffrey and Elizabeth Knafo's De Re Metallica transports us to the scorched environs of Mojave gold mines, updating buried-treasure legends. PLUS Jonathan (Commune) Berman's sneak peek at Van Tassel's Giant Rock, Jordan Blady's Slab City Prom, Dan Anderson's Food City, John Warren's Action on the Strip, and pieces by Pierre Conti, Wago Kreider, Jim Granato, and Enid Blader. SAT. 11/30: SYNTH BRITANNIA + DAVIS + VORONINA + HEADBOGGLE + Inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard, and against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise ’80s Britain, small pockets of electronic musicians dreamt of a synth-powered Sound of the Future. Featuring Gary Numan, Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Depeche Mode, et al, this BBC debut follows that generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesizer from the experimental fringes to the center of the pop stage. Preceding this hr-plus survey, analog maestros John Davis, Lana Voronina, and Headboggle each perform a tribute to this defining period. AND ‘80s cocktail specials! $8.00.
SAT. 12/7: RAY HARRYHAUSEN + GERRY ANDERSON + COLBURN + ROURKE + Honoring the passing of two titans of animation and puppetry, a pair of recent biographies anchor eye-popping pixilation work in their spirit. In its North American premiere is Martha Colburn’s masterful Metamorfoza, scored by the Rotterdam Philharmonic! Jeremy Rourke acts the puppet himself with his live “animation” of the projector in Who Goes There?. AND Vicki Bennett/PLU's The Golem, Janie Geiser’s The Red Book, Bruce Bickford/Frank Zappa’s Baby Snakes, and Willis O’Brien’s famously banned King Kong scenes. As to the featured docs: Leonard Nimoy narrates the stop-motion-magical Harryhausen Chronicles, and the BBC sends off Anderson in The Making of the 20th Century. Come early for “Two Rings” of Baldwin-mixed 16mm circus phantasmagoria, with 99-cent beer and free popcorn.
SAT. 12/14: CHILDREN OF THE STARS + APOCALYPSE LATER + At the Unarius Academy of Science east of San Diego, Nikola Tesla is a “Space Brother”, Satan drives a Cadillac, and science fiction is real! Using rare archival footage and interviews, Bill Perrine’s Children of the Stars chronicles the Unarius Society, a UFO contactee group who relive their past lives on other planets by making their own science-fiction films. In person, Zeke Piestrup’s Apocalypse Later traces End-Times predictions from the Book of Daniel to Oakland’s Harold Camping, the TV evangelist who issued his own doomsday proclamation on May 21. Wago Kreider’s New Doorways to Learning, 16mm Mormon jaw-droppers, and free blood-red wine christen these premieres. $6.66.
