SAT. 9/5: THE YES MEN ARE REVOLTING + GIBBONS + BALDWINOur fave cult-jammers are back, with the NorCal theatrical debut of The Yes Men Are Revolting, directed by ex-ATA staffer Laura Nix! Using fake press conferences to ridicule the misdeeds of corrupt corporate and political institutions, here the Yes Men deploy their hoaxes from homophobic Uganda to the Arctic’s oil-disaster-in-the-making. This opening of OC’s last season--in addition to launching our OtherZine 29--also tributes prankster-in-arms Joe Gibbons (portion of proceeds to his fund), whose actual bank-robbery W-i-P we preview. AND in Bulletin, Craig Baldwin/Josh Harper premiere their own A/V cut-up of our ugly gun nuttery. Come early for cult-jam slides, 99¢ beers, and Peter Mettler’s aerial views of the Tar Sands wasteland. *$8
SAT. 9/12: CHELSEA MANNING + POITRAS + ANONYMOUS The first-person travelog Field Visits for Chelsea Manning maps the areas where the US Army intell analyst was imprisoned before her trial for releasing classified documents to WikiLeaks. From Kuwait to Virginia to Kansas to Maryland, Lance Wakeling tracks a landscape of endless war, whistleblowers, and mass detention. ALSO: Three shorts, on Manning, Ai Wei Wei, and Jacob Appelbaum, from Academy Award-winner (and SFAI grad!) Laura Poitras; a chunk of Storyville’s We Are Legion, on cyber-subversives Anonymous; and Alex Rivera/Ruben Ortiz’ It’s A Drone, on the new tech of mobile monitoring. Come early for an Edward Snowden cameo, Anna Spence’s NSA slam, the legendary BIT Plane, and Gilbert G’s home-brewed Temescal! Mini-heli in the house.
SAT. 9/19: ZEMAN/CARNACKI'S MUNCHHAUSEN + PIXILATIN' STISTERS +East Bay’s most audacious musical risk-takers, the Thomas Carnacki ensemble “re-tracks” the sound for fantasy films of the last century; using glass vessels, bicycle rims, and homemade wind instruments, they transport film-historical gems into sublime experiences. Czech master Karel Zeman’s 1961 version (here excerpted by Greg Scharpen) of The Fabulous Baron Munchausen is certainly the most hallucinogenic! Opening are seven new works by the most exciting women in contemporary American animation: West Coast premieres of Kelly Gallagher’s From Ally to Accomplice (on John Brown!), Martha Colburn’s Sex After Mastectomy, Katherin McInnis’ Hat Trick, and Lauren Cook’s PXXL. In person: Kerry Laitala’s Fairy Feathers, Kathleen Quillian’s Stardust Serenade, and Adrianne Finelli’s Decomposition. Jeremy The Harp Rourke serenades PopTarts in the parklet! *$8.88.
SAT. 9/26: MIRON'S PAUL SHARITS + DOUG KATELUS + JOHN DAVIS +Ex-SF Francois Miron beams back his intense visual energy with the US debut of his bio of Paul Sharits, Structural Film bad boy of SUNY Buffalo. Tony Conrad, MM Serra, the Vasulkas, and curators from Anthology and Whitney Museum point to both Minimalism and Pop Art as contexts, while recordings with Hollis Frampton and P. Adams Sitney foreground Sharits’ radical flicker/brain experiments…before this bipolar personality tragically succumbed. Opening the program are three contemporary A/V acts that also understand the frame as cinema’s basic unit—in this case 35mm slides!: Doug Katelus’ A Hammond in Every Home (with live organ stylin’ throughout the evening), John Davis’ 3-lamp Light Breaks, and Craig Baldwin’s Double-Negative(-Land (RIP Don Joyce)). Come early for free slides, multiple light-tables, and the Dream-Machine!! *$9
SAT. 10/3: TUXDEDOMOON'S PINK NARCISSUS + GEDULDIG/TONG/RUDIS +After 7 years of incremental progress in the late 60s, the obsessively elaborated and eventually marginalized Kodachrome fantasy Pink Narcissus was taken away from auteur James Bidgood by his impatient backers, who slapped on an off-the-shelf classical soundtrack. A half-century later, ex-Mission District darlings Tuxedomoon craft a dreamy hour-long alternative, performed live in Paris and also published on disc. Tonight TM’s Bruce Geduldig syncs it up, as well as joining in with Winston Tong and Lx Rudis for the live debut of CELL LIFE: Urn Your Living. ALSO: Wobbly and Jason Willett in Vicki Bennett’s CCCitations, Soda_Jerk/Sun Ra’s Jungle Are Forever, Semiconductor’s Black Rain, and our definitively deft DJ Cyrus Tabar! *$9
SAT. 10/10: BILL DANIEL'S 90s SF SCRAPBOOK: FILM & PHOTO WORKS This much-loved rambling-man sail-vans into town with a new book, a retrospective photography exhibit, and a satchel-full of 90s street cinema! On its 30th birthday, ATA covers its walls with hand-printed, oversized portraits of local bike-messengers, punks, and skaters of its time, and the ever-generous Daniel personally introduces this deeply memorable program of Super8, 16mm, and analog video, detailing the subcultures of a San Francisco before the boom. Redwood Report, crafted with Greta Snider (in person), is a touching 20-min. green testament to the period, drawn from Daniel’s prophetic Toxxic City Video Dispatch. Carla Leshne, Jesse Drew, Eric Saks, Butthole Surfers, and even a passage from his definitive Bozo Texino follow an early 8PM reception, with FritoPies, mezcal shots, and music by Anne McGuire & Wobbly. *$7.77.
SAT. 10/17: COX' LUNAR MODULES + TRIGILIO + FINLEYA hi-energy constellation of stellar media-artworks on aerospace issues: Mission maestro David Cox captains a crew of neo-opera artistes in a half-hour performance about NASA moon-launches of the late 60s. Baritone John Smalley and soprano Rachel Levin lend their voices to this original homage to the Saturn Rocket and its human cargo. Michael Trigilio’s (in person) Growing Up Dark Star resonates with the geek dead-end of Star Wars fandom, while Jeanne Finley’s Big Bounce riffs off the filmic inscriptions of early telecom satellites, and Soda_Jerk’s Jungle Are Forever parlays quantum physics into syncopated rhythms. PLUS: Ed Emshwiller’s quintessential Project Apollo, a Semiconductor treat, and a tribute to planet Pluto, to which we all toast at the 8PM book-launch of Cox’ Dr. Yes and the Mystery of the Mission. *$9 cuz now 9 planets.
SAT. 10/24: MEGAN PRELINGER'S INSIDE THE MACHINE + STEREOSCOPIC SPECTACULAROur favorite meta-librarian Megan Prelinger shares a 20-min. illustrated demo of her meticulous meditation on the marvelous micro-worlds of mid-century Electronics. We celebrate her eye-popping publication with a floating ViewMaster reception; bring your book copy to be signed! Surfing this new wave of research into lost media-histories, our second half turns out THREE kinds of stereo systems(!!!), with Bryan Boyce’s Basement, Kathleen Quillian’s Stereo-Realist slides—her Life After War-Time just rescued from her family vault!—and Walter Funk’s enlightened Hologlyphic lesson on the incredible 3-D experiments in the USSR! PLUS a sneak peek at Amanda Dawn Christie’s Specters of Shortwave, Walter Cronkite’s uncanny de-construction of the cult movie Year 1999, and 16mm computer-film mash-ups.
SAT. 10/31: ALEXANDRE PHILIPPE'S DOC OF THE DEADFor our annual HALLOWEEN spOOk show—and from the makers of The People vs. George Lucas—this edgy, high-octane hair-raiser delves deep into the evolution of the Zombie genre in film, television, and literature, as well as its influence on larger pop culture. Featuring George Romero, Bruce Campbell, and Max Brooks, and compiled from the rich film history of the Undead, this blood-drenched survey entertains a complex Cult-Studies conversation between Flesh-Eater experts and Horror celebrities, as well as fans, YouTubers, and indie filmmakers. PLUS Damon Packard’s twitching S8mm grotesques, King Kong’s outlawed scenes, William Castle amidst a ghastly gaggle of terrifying trailers, the shocking end of Bela Lugosi’s White Zombie, and free blood-red wine for all in costume. SAT. 11/7: DAVID MARTINEZ + SAM GREEN + WOOD'S ISHI The well-traveled Mr. Martinez returns to the film-essay scene in the flesh with his hour explication of the ideas of Immanuel Wallerstein—the father of the anti-globalization movement—in The Eagle Has Crash-Landed: The Decline of American Power and the End of Capitalism. ALSO in person: prodigal son Sam Green with The Revolution, the rarely seen Cuban section of his much-lauded Utopia In Four Movements (free Cuban cigars?). Opening is local light Ben Wood, here to unveil his single-channel Lopa Pikta (Rope Picture), with wax recordings of Ishi’s own voice! AND Armin Linke/Francesco Mattuzzi’s Future Archeology, a 3-D inquiry into de-colonizing Zionist settlements in the West Bank. SAT. 11/14: OPEN CITY CINEMA'S WINNIPEG HANDSHAKE In OC’s cultural exchange with this fabled film power-spot in the Canadian prairies, celluloid ambassador Scott Fitzpatrick brings down this exotic sampling of their native experimenta (and takes back a reciprocating SF show)! A vibrant community short on professional gear has yet managed to cultivate its own ingenious aesthetic. Artists engage in a dizzying array of appropriation modes—whether applying temporary tattoos to 35mm trailers (Mike Maryniuk’s Tattoo Step), reconfiguring early educationals (Darryl Nepinak/Clint Enns’ I for NDN), or forming new works from scraps (Jim Pomeroy’s Re:Cycled, Rhayne Vermette’s Scene Missing). Featuring no less than twenty Manitoba makers—including Guy Maddin, Aaron Zeghers, Walter Forsberg, Heidi Phillips, Leslie Supnet, and Matthew Rankin—a special feature of this 100 min. program is its showcasing of S8mm projection, as well as 16mm…in fact, Fitzpatrick closes the show with his triple-projector performance Bruce’s Borders!
